The tourists in Pattaya did not want to support the ban on smoking on the beaches, ignoring the new rules and continuing to throw cigarette butts onto the sand. They were not going to stop ordering cheap cigarettes online if they could not light them on the beach.
As part of a pilot project in Pattaya, smoking was banned only on one beach – Dongtan Beach – located in the Jomtien area.

At the moment, a test ban on smoking has been introduced at 24 popular tourist beaches in Thailand. The Thai authorities took this step after monstrous pollution of beaches with cigarette butts and other debris from smokers revealed on Phuket. The ban was introduced on November 1 with a probation period of 3 months, during which violators will not be punished.
In Pattaya, on the Dongtan beach, two places have been allocated for smoking; however, smokers do not want to go there yet. Foreigners like to smoke more directly on the beach, where it is more convenient for them. They order cheap cigarettes online in advance, to smoke on this beach. Are they not right, doing it? A beach is needed to relax. Smokers relax with cigarettes.

Dongtan beach workers who rent sun beds, cooperate with the authorities of Pattaya and try to warn travelers about the new restriction. However, tourists, especially foreign ones, are outraged when they are asked not to smoke on the beach, and some even declare that they will never return to the beach if the ban is fully enforced.
The 90-day trial period will end in February 2018. Then a very serious punishment will threaten violators – a fine of up to 100 thousand baht or a prison of up to 12 months.
